About Solitaire Associations: Words

Solitaire Associations: Words is a free browser puzzle game built around one idea: combine the board-management rhythm of solitaire with category-based word logic. The result is a puzzle format that rewards sequencing and clarity over speed or luck. There is no timer or account requirement, while a level-specific move budget rewards efficient planning.

What the Game Is

Each level presents a solitaire-style board filled with word cards and category cards. Your goal is to sort every word into its matching category by managing a four-column tableau, a draw pile, and four foundation slots within the level's move limit.

The challenge comes from hidden information. Cards start face-down in the tableau, so every move is also a decision about what to reveal next. The game rewards players who think ahead: choosing which card to expose, when to draw from the deck, and which commitments are safe to make before the board is fully visible.

With over 7,000 levels and increasing category density as you progress, the game scales from approachable introductory puzzles to complex multi-category boards that require deliberate planning to resolve cleanly.

Project Goals

The project focuses on low-friction play. There is no account requirement or timer. A visible move budget adds strategic pressure without demanding fast reactions. Players can use undo to compare branches and restart whenever they want a cleaner attempt, keeping the focus on decision quality rather than reflexes.

Design decisions are guided by readability and decision clarity. A good level should be solvable by a thoughtful player, should provide useful information as you progress through it, and should reward better sequencing over random trial. Levels that feel unsolvable or arbitrary are revised to ensure every board has a logical path to completion.

The walkthrough system supports players who want to study specific levels. Each walkthrough page covers a common mistake pattern, a corrected move sequence, and a recovery checklist — all written against the real category data for that level. The goal is to help players build better decision habits, not just finish individual levels.

How It Is Built

The game is implemented as a modern web application built with Next.js and TypeScript, and optimized for both desktop and mobile play. Core mechanics include drag-and-drop interactions, accessible touch controls, and persistent local progress tracking so your completed levels and best step counts are saved in your browser without requiring an account.

The full game runs in the browser with no server-side state per session. Level data is compiled at build time and served statically, which keeps load times fast and gameplay responsive even on slower connections.

Gameplay content and the user interface are updated iteratively based on playtesting, observed session behavior, and common player mistakes identified in early levels. New levels are added regularly, with each batch reviewed for balance and solvability before release.
